Good one Mc, I found this good read, http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20150603-the-land-that-gave-us-dinosaurs . from the article, interesting stuff ... Owen had discovered that they were something new. He called them dinosaurs.
Strictly speaking, then, 1842 is when the history of dinosaur science began. That was the year when Owen actually invented the word
