WORLD'S REFUGEES NOW NUMBER 51.2 M: UN
Four-time Walkley Award winning political commentator and Churchill Fellow, has returned to the fray over concern that the integrity of news dissemination is continually being threatened by a partisan media.
Wow, that’s a shocking statistic. But 51 million? Blimey, that’s twice the population of Australia! And you can add another quarter million to account for those poor buggers currently streaming out of Iraq.
The ABC and Fairfax are slavishly reporting this figure as some sort of biblical UN certitude. But, as usual, the Left has tripped over its own excessive bias... the figure is grossly incorrect.
The correct figure, although fluid, is closer to 15.9 million refugees, 35.6 million internally displaced persons and fewer than one million asylum seekers.
A refugee is defined as: “A person who, being outside his/her country of nationality or habitual residence, has a well-founded fear of persecution on account of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, and is unable or unwilling to avail him/herself of the protection of that country, or to return there, for fear of persecution.”
The truth is that almost 52 million people in the world are in trouble and need help.
A far more meaningful statistic from the UN and headline from the Left Press would be, “Islamic terrorism responsible for all of 52 million displaced persons and a million murders”.
But let’s be fair here, Islam is not entirely responsible for 52 million people fleeing in fear of their lives, I mean UN figures show there are 18 registered refugees from New Zealand, three from Iceland and even one from Vanuatu.
Of course Kiwis have been known to face persecution from jealous rams, Inuits have suffered serious brass monkey problems and the odd Nivan has been discovered partaking of forbidden kai kai in the wrong hut.
So it’s entirely unreasonable to suggest that Islam is responsible for all 52 million persecuted souls.
In the absence of any meaningful UN statistic or Fairfax headline, it’s fair to assume that Islamic terrorism is responsible for, okay, let’s say “most” of the world’s displaced persons.
I had better correct that, because under section 18C it’s unlawful for me to couch the words “Islamic” and “terrorism” in the same sentence.
Let’s see, how can I put that then? Okay, I’ll have another go at it:
In the absence of any meaningful UN statistic or Fairfax headline, it’s fair to assume that these rag-headed, murderous savages who tear people’s heads off and eat their organs, rape little girls and their mothers before killing them, do funny things with goats and worship a paedophile five times a day are responsible for all the world’s refugees.
...well, not all.
