Personally I'm agnostic on same sex marriage. I understand the arguments on both sides. On the basis of fairness I believe everyone should enjoy equal rights, so I can only support same sex marriage. But the issue of marriage is a little more complex - and deeply personal.

My traditional view of marriage has always been a union between a man and a woman as an institution to produce and raise children (with exceptions, as every rule has them). But on balance, equality is the overriding argument. As I enjoy a wonderful marriage of 23 years, I can't deny that right to anyone else in a country as free and tolerant as Australia.

You don't choose to be gay or lesbian. Nobody would choose a life of personal anguish, wondering why they are not having 'normal' feelings towards the opposite sex. I have a friend who is transgender who went through a world of hell, rejected by his, now her, own parents because he felt she was really a woman. The greatest pain of all is to be disowned by your own parents.

What I can't accept is the hatred, vilification and personal low ground this very deeply felt issue has degenerated into, largely by the left and supporters of same sex marriage.

PM Abbott is a conservative leader. He has a duty to represent his conservative base. He is doing just that.

But going by the responses I've seen, heard and read you would think he has ordered the mass round up of homosexuals and ordered they be sent to the gallows. What he has in fact done is to take the issue to the people in the form of a plebiscite.

You can't get more democratic or fairer than that.

Which reminds me of our two former Labor PMs, both who abandoned their 'progressive' voter base and voted against same sex marriage just a couple of years or so ago.

Yes, both Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd sat with the 'No' voters in the parliament when they had the chance to exercise their conscience vote on the issue.

The worst description of Gillard and Rudd at the time from the progressives - their voter base - was 'disappointed'.

The descriptions of Abbott, for taking the issue to the people, is largely unprintable.

As for Penny Wong and Tanya Plibersek and their 'fight for love' tweets and public pronouncements the past 24 hours, where were they hiding for the six years when in government, and in a position to do something?

The sanctimonious hypocrisy never ceases to astound me.

And then came the traitor, Whitlam.

Labor needs every vote it can muster to be re-elected to govern and with the promiscuous youth would put Labor within voting range of the next election that they could see themselves back in business .

Some Libs have made a very minor error of judgement. The Labor Party will go beserk because they are as guilty as hell and trying to keep them and their Union mates out of jail. The more they scream the worse they look. TD - this is only a Labor problem and they are digging their own graves.

The invitation was issued a very long time ago and long before this RC was even in the pipeline. The RC - obviously not completed - and the invitation was rejected and rightly so. I'd think it would have to be the 'end of story' but some people want to make a great deal from little. Shame some people have little on which to ponder
!

So the problem lies not with Heydon, not with Abbott or the Government, but with some inattentive office staff in the NSW Law establishment organising the Sir Garfied Barwick Lecture, an annual function of the Law Society.

Are you really telling me TD, that you thought Heydon might be a Labor supporter?. Everyone has a right to vote - I think Freddy Feral would have realised that Heydon probably wasn't a Labor supporter before the RC started . If it's important now, why weren't you asking his political colors months ago?

Homosexual "marriage" belongs in the same category as a cripple in a wheelchair being encouraged to run up a flight of stairs. The delusional autistic media consumer class needs to take responsibility, grow up, and DON'T LISTEN TO THE LAPDOG MEDIA!

It's reached the point the CIA have worked so hard towards for 60 years, the permanent dumbing down of most people and the preoccupation with "libs" - animal lib, queer lib, whatever lib. Following this subversion will come crisis and then normalisation.

Can anyone guess who the first people rounded up and shot during normalisation will be?

I belong to the married group. Most belong to it at some point and always have. I've never contemplated that one day I may belong to a gay group. I cannot remember inviting them into my group. I cannot remember forcing my way into their group uninvited. That would be rude. I'd certainly never bust in there and demand wholesale changes to their long standing practices. That would be nasty. Gays and straight can all co-exist in the human group but gays can't join the straight group because they're not straight. And I'll never barge in to the Collingwood cheer squad and insist they change their allegiances to the brown and gold. That would be ugly.

No he won't Bruce, There has been no damage done at all. You are sounding hysterical like the Labor morons on the front bench. This is a total beat up and thought you would be able to see through it.

Juggernaut is correct in questioning the meaning of equality in the context of various sexual scenarios. There is clearly nothing about gay marriage that will, or possibly could, make such relationships 'equal' to heterosexual unions. How can equality exist when natural child birth can't be part of the gay relationship, when the sexual functions involved are literally dead ends when it comes to reproduction, when the greater part of society does and will continue to view homosexuality as, at the least, a little bit grubby, when children with gay "parents' note the difference between them and children born of a normal couple. How can equality exist in situations such as those?

If we are to promote equality above all else then paedophiles should enjoy our support for their sexual preferences. Polygamists also and those engaging in consensual incestuous relationships. Why can't Billy's Mum marry Billy? Who are we to discriminate with claims of moral superiority or maintaining important traditions? Not everyone can be treated equally. Society must decide what it regards is the definition of marriage. I'm hoping they choose to retain the current definition. Instead of gatecrashing heterosexual marriage, gays can achieve equality by creating their own parallel version, equal in all respects but the name. I'm starting to resent their constant bellowing demands.

Still waiting for d0d0 and Team Åustralia to apologise.

Why does it have to be a “marriage”? What is it about the word marriage that is so important? The poofs can already have fully recognised civil unions. They can have their marriage ceremonies. They are even able to adopt children, a step that I vehemently disagree with, but it is happening. So why all of this fuss about the word "marriage"? The poofter lobby are just plain feral.

I don't remember anyone called Cosmic Debris. Or did spell check trip you up? Now tell me about this mysterious Facebook friend. Come on. Put up or shut up. And where is Team Åustralia to defend me from your slander, or as I said earlier, does it only go one way? Give evidence. Go on. Anything less and you are shown up for the fraud and liar you are.

Not this sh#t again, d0d0. Who's Cosmic Debris?

@Barry75 [sarc] please show some respect and spell the name correctly => "Team Åustralia". "Though Å is derived from an A with a ring, it is considered a separate letter. It developed as a form of semi-ligature of an A with a smaller o above it to denote a long and darker A..." [/sarc]. Your post explains a lot about last night and today's activities. Thank you :)
