WHAT POINT IS THERE IN HANGING A DEAD MAN?
Four-time Walkley Award winning political commentator and Churchill Fellow, has returned to the fray over concern that the integrity of news dissemination is continually being threatened by a partisan media.
Judicial penalties should reflect societal values and are usually imposed in the context of the time that the crime was committed and the crimes of Rolf Harris were committed from the 60s to the early 80s.
The Left insists the crimes of Julia Gillard, committed in the 90s, simply shouldn’t count, "That’s too long ago to be relevant" they say. Yet conspiracy to defraud is a timeless crime. A sex crime is not! Sexual mores and attitudes change with the times.
And they were very different times in the 60s when a whistle was a compliment and a pinch on the bum was reciprocated. Those who took good-natured and playful interaction a step too far were quickly condemned to the outer.
Sexuality was self regulated, and it worked.
Now, with a stream of paedophilia disclosures, you need to be careful how you interact with children and worry that you’re holding your daughter the right way.
Earlier this year my 3yo boy managed to get out the front gate and took off to the corner shop. The usual frantic search was underway around the house when an old bloke came to the door with his dog, “I think your little boy is up the street there”, he said. “Where? Why didn’t you grab him?”, I asked.
“Once upon a time I would have”, he said, “but you know how it looks now.” His reply stung me. How much damage have these vile paedophiles done to us all?
Paedophelia is not new, it’s the recognition of the extent of it that’s new, and the crimes of Rolf Harris were confined to females, and at the middle range of the sick spectrum, incomparable to the far worse crimes committed in the entertainment industry and the legal fraternity. Those bastards continue to survive unimpeded and protected.
They are not bra snappers or bum pinchers. They prey on infants of either sex, with a preference for males, and they delight in physically and mentally damaging their victims.
As much as I detested Rolf he should not be put in the category of a South Australian Premier who damaged a young orphan boy internally to the extent that he was flown to Asia for treatment rather than risk questions being asked at a local hospital.
Rolf Harris is a symbolic trophy for Yew Tree and now his wealth is a target for Slater & Gordon.
[An explanation to the posters who misquoted and verballed me: Rolf Harris has never been a friend of mine. He was staying at my property when a TV crew was filming a show. He was doing British Paints and I was doing Dulux. I do not support him and I do not like him. I described him (when he was first charged) as “creepy” and that he “will be found guilty”. In a former post I received an equal amount of criticism (probably from the same posters) for declaring his guilt! Others had told me to be careful of him around kids. Short of taking out a full page ad, saying Rolf is a groper, I could only warn those who already knew. It was they who were warning me. What evidence could I have taken to the police? “I have no evidence, constable but someone has just warned me about someone I think is creepy?” As I said in the latest post, “... Harris was more than a touchy feely pervert... and needs to be punished for crimes he committed up to a half century ago...”. This blog was the first to name Rolf Harris as the ‘mysterious person’ charged in the UK. And this blog was the only one to declare his guilt. Rolf Harris is already a dead man so what point is there in hanging a dead man? To say I condone his actions is very wrong but I am determined to allow you to have your say anyway.]
