WHAT POINT IS THERE IN HANGING A DEAD MAN?

Larry Pickering

Four-time Walkley Award winning political commentator and Churchill Fellow, has returned to the fray over concern that the integrity of news dissemination is continually being threatened by a partisan media.

Judicial penalties should reflect societal values and are usually imposed in the context of the time that the crime was committed and the crimes of Rolf Harris were committed from the 60s to the early 80s.

The Left insists the crimes of Julia Gillard, committed in the 90s, simply shouldn’t count, "That’s too long ago to be relevant" they say. Yet conspiracy to defraud is a timeless crime. A sex crime is not! Sexual mores and attitudes change with the times.

And they were very different times in the 60s when a whistle was a compliment and a pinch on the bum was reciprocated. Those who took good-natured and playful interaction a step too far were quickly condemned to the outer.

Sexuality was self regulated, and it worked.

Now, with a stream of paedophilia disclosures, you need to be careful how you interact with children and worry that you’re holding your daughter the right way.

Earlier this year my 3yo boy managed to get out the front gate and took off to the corner shop. The usual frantic search was underway around the house when an old bloke came to the door with his dog, “I think your little boy is up the street there”, he said. “Where? Why didn’t you grab him?”, I asked.

“Once upon a time I would have”, he said, “but you know how it looks now.” His reply stung me. How much damage have these vile paedophiles done to us all?

Paedophelia is not new, it’s the recognition of the extent of it that’s new, and the crimes of Rolf Harris were confined to females, and at the middle range of the sick spectrum, incomparable to the far worse crimes committed in the entertainment industry and the legal fraternity. Those bastards continue to survive unimpeded and protected.

They are not bra snappers or bum pinchers. They prey on infants of either sex, with a preference for males, and they delight in physically and mentally damaging their victims.

As much as I detested Rolf he should not be put in the category of a South Australian Premier who damaged a young orphan boy internally to the extent that he was flown to Asia for treatment rather than risk questions being asked at a local hospital.

Rolf Harris is a symbolic trophy for Yew Tree and now his wealth is a target for Slater & Gordon.

[An explanation to the posters who misquoted and verballed me: Rolf Harris has never been a friend of mine. He was staying at my property when a TV crew was filming a show. He was doing British Paints and I was doing Dulux. I do not support him and I do not like him. I described him (when he was first charged) as “creepy” and that he “will be found guilty”. In a former post I received an equal amount of criticism (probably from the same posters) for declaring his guilt! Others had told me to be careful of him around kids. Short of taking out a full page ad, saying Rolf is a groper, I could only warn those who already knew. It was they who were warning me. What evidence could I have taken to the police? “I have no evidence, constable but someone has just warned me about someone I think is creepy?” As I said in the latest post, “... Harris was more than a touchy feely pervert... and needs to be punished for crimes he committed up to a half century ago...”. This blog was the first to name Rolf Harris as the ‘mysterious person’ charged in the UK. And this blog was the only one to declare his guilt. Rolf Harris is already a dead man so what point is there in hanging a dead man? To say I condone his actions is very wrong but I am determined to allow you to have your say anyway.]

From what I read, most of Rolf's behaviour happened back in an era where most of it was considered, asa Larry put it, touchy feelie, What kind of person waits almost 50 years to make accusations like these?

One can but wonder just why those ladies who' been subjected to Harris's unwanted 'bits' had waited for a very long time to make their complaints? While I don't condone his behaviour, and indeed it's a pretty 'sick' kind of thing... seems a bit 'sus' that it's all come to the 'fore' of late????

From the ABC to the BBC to the Australian Seven network the habits of Harris were well know for fifty years, why was nothing done before this case was heard. Was the media negligent.

The judge's sentencing statement, wherein he graphically describes the assaults of the young girl, makes gruesome reading. It's no wonder to me that people feel he's got off lightly, presumably the bit about only having to serve half his sentence in custody. Frankly, I now feel that he deserves to die in prison. And I also feel that any other victims should be able to have their day in court against him.

"[Bindi Harris] described how the performer's TV persona was in sharp contrast with the way he would behave at home behind closed doors, often being withdrawn and showing little interest in her." Well, with the contents of his computer revealed by the police and prosecution, I guess we can imagine what he was doing behind those closed doors.

"The Attorney General says it only takes one person to trigger the "unduly lenient sentence" process. Law officers now have until Friday August 1 to consider whether they wish to refer it."

It may not be over for him yet: "Rolf Harris' sentence is to be referred to the Attorney General, who will consider whether it is "unduly lenient". AG's office tweets: "We confirm Rolf Harris's sentence has been referred to us under the unduly lenient sentence scheme."

Poor bastard. There are thugs who kill people who get less. The world is a safer place now an old man is locked up. He was still a great entertainer.

"Harris' sentence of five years and nine months for 12 counts of indecent assault is broken down as follows:

Count 1: 9 months' imprisonment
Count 2: 6 months' imprisonment consecutive
Count 3: 15 months' imprisonment consecutive
Count 4: 15 months' imprisonment concurrent
Count 5: 15 months' imprisonment concurrent
Count 6: 12 months imprisonment concurrent
Count 7: 15 months' imprisonment consecutive
Count 8: 12 months' imprisonment concurrent
Count 9: 12 months' imprisonment consecutive
Count 10: 9 months' imprisonment concurrent
Count 11: 9 months imprisonment concurrent.
Count 12: 12 months' imprisonment consecutive"

"Harris would have faced a maximum sentence of 14 years for the assault on the girl aged seven or eight in 1969, had the offence been committed today.

On the five counts relating to his daughter's friend, Harris would have faced a maximum term of eight years if committed today."

Tan me hide when I'm dead, Fred.

"Harris showed no reaction as he left the dock." Not really surprised at the lack of reaction. I think he knew all of this was coming the day the cops took away his computer for investigation. As I recall, he did a sort of OJ Simpson and disappeared from the scene right after that.

"Harris will serve half of that time and be released on licence."

"Rolf Harris is jailed for five years and nine months."

We won’t be needing you, you can’t call a Deity a paedophile.” Who said that: The Kidd.

Rolf Harris will not stand trial over allegations that he downloaded sexual images of children, prosecutors said today.

The entertainer was accused of copying a total of 33 indecent images after trawling websites including 'Tiny Teen P****'; Teeny Tiny Girlfriend'; 'Young Little Girlies'; Russian Virgins; 'My Little Nieces'; 'Little V******'; and 'Babes Joy'.

But prosecutor Sasha Wass QC told Southwark Crown Court: "In the light of the 12 unanimous convictions on the counts that Mr Harris faced, the Crown Prosecution Service has decided that it is no longer in the public interest to proceed with a trial on these four charges."

From the sentencing session: "Material found on Rolf Harris' computer included hundreds of adult porn images, as well as 24 indecent images. Some were of children under 13." Harris was also supposed to be arraigned on 4 charges of making indecent images, but the Prosecution chose not to proceed with those.

Notwithstanding any criminal acts by Rolf....just lucky he isn't the current President of South Africa...Rape charges you say......No Problem....Just a Walk In The Park....

Larry, to let him get away with these crimes without being punished because he has outlived his usefulness is ridiculous. He must be punished financially, physically & mentally 84 or 24 does not matter 1 iota. Now Larry the premier who caused a young boy internal damage & then shipped him out of the country to avoid questioning...... simply deserves to be put down, this crime deserves nothing less than capitol punishment again regardless of pedos age!!

Bring back the lash, but then RH might want more?

While we have a principle that a person is deemed innocent until proven guilty, now that he has been found guilty he should suffer the legal consequences, regardless of his age. Otherwise abusers by delaying trails can avoid appropriate punishment. And the punishment must be tailored to what was applicable at the time the offences occurred.
