... of course they were, but it’s more serious than it appears

Larry Pickering

Four-time Walkley Award winning political commentator and Churchill Fellow, has returned to the fray over concern that the integrity of news dissemination is continually being threatened by a partisan media.

The image of little brown paper bags at the ready to convince smugglers to turn back their boats is a quaint proposition and certainly not a Cabinet decision... not even Minister Peter Dutton was aware of the tactic when he declared it untrue. But it is true and it’s a foolish one that will reverberate between Jakarta and Canberra.

Labor and Green notables claim that it will create a “pull factor”. That claim is a nonsense, as illegal immigrants leaving from Java will now refuse to pay people smugglers for a passage that dumps them back on the same jetty they left from.

A more serious factor is that Joko Widodo will now seek to do everything within his limited power to embarrass the Abbott Government with the eager assistance of the ABC, the Guardian and Fairfax. But none of those three realises what is actually happening here.

You see Jakarta has had its sights set on Abbott ever since he stopped the boats. The animosity has been intense and unrelenting because Abbott did exactly what I predicted he would do two years ago when I reported he would stop the boats overnight, despite Jakarta and Labor’s contention that it couldn’t be done.

At the time, Rudd’s broken borders policy was depleting Australia’s budget position by $7 billion per year and it was a simple solution for Scott Morrison to throw a paltry few million at Indonesia’s corrupt military to stop the boats leaving and allow those on the water to be towed back. And that is exactly what happened... overnight!

This not only highlighted Jakarta’s glaring impotence when it came to the military, but Morrison’s envoys had foolishly disclosed the “paltry” millions that were now in the pockets of the generals were to be deducted from its aid budget.

A double whammy had been delivered to SBY and Widodo and it was one that would not soon be forgotten.

Was it any wonder relations became strained from this point on with claims of phone tapping and “we don’t need your aid”? Widodo’s white hot anger was exemplified in his determination to unnecessarily execute the Bali two, his refusal to even answer Abbott’s phone calls and his shunning of the current terrorist conference.

For Australia to deal directly with the military of a sovereign nation is a perilous ploy and the latest claims of Australia paying Indonesia’s people smugglers directly could be a step too far because you can bet your socks it will be savagely exploited by a humiliated Jakarta, and at the Abbott Government’s cost.

The boats may have stopped but in the end it may prove much more costly than merely the payments made to Indonesia’s corrupt military and to its people smugglers.

It’s not certain that Abbott possesses the necessary diplomatic skills to disarm this ticking time bomb before the ABC and Fairfax wake up that this could be a fair dinkum diversion from Shorten’s troubles.

Trolls and Hackers are stopping me from getting on to the later posts

This is why it will go nowhere.Must be some kind of joke.Surely this kind of info must be able to be reported on

This has to be a joke of some kind...

Kim Carr, Hansard, March 22, 2011:
Suggestions that we can just stop the boats as the Liberal Party would assert are completely nonsensical.

Bob Carr, Hansard, June 28, 2012:
The opposition policy is to tow the boats back. It is primitive. It is unworkable. It is no alternative.

Wayne Swan, Hansard, September 12, 2012:
The leader of the opposition ... continues to be at war with the facts… He comes in here and claims that tow-backs and temporary protection visas can somehow work.

And further more, have a nice day.

And IE, you didn't argue with me on your own, you and SG and OR, were all on the attack all the time, all joining in like a flock of birds, you mob acted like you'se owned the PP. And how many others did you lot attack ? And now you hardly talk to each other. Shut up, and let people have their say.

You are pathetic IE, You whinged that someone had been ringing you late at night, you claimed it was a PP poster. Because you had many arguments with me, you pointed the finger at me. When questioned about your phantom caller, you couldn't even answer, if the caller was male or female. When pushed, you said you never heard a voice, because they hung up when you picked the phone up. I can assure you it wasn't me, because, if I had your number, I would tell you what a low bludgeing arsehole you are. You ripped off your employer, got a big payout, and now you are reaping what you sowed.

Anyone ever thought this story is an ABC Fairfax Scam? They got a bunch of illegals and crew and paid them to try for Oz? They are capable of any crooked deal you could think of.

Mike.. you can always catch it on iView.. i.e., if you really need to see it..... I watched part of it but became rather disenchanted.... give it a go - would like to get your take on it.

twright.. yes that could happen but I think that would let the cat out of the bag before a election and the scare tactics would jump in that if you vote LNP you will have a dictator ship , you know and I know that would not be true but there are heaps of fools out there who would believe it and vote labor/green so it could not be changed. It has to happen as this great country is going to the dogs the way the system is at the moment.

from Bolt's page
The asylum-seeker boat at the centre of the ASIS bribery allegations was leaking and judged to be in danger of sinking, forcing Australian sailors to transfer those on board to another vessel…
It is understood the crew of the Armidale-class patrol boat HMAS Wollongong then assessed the seaworthiness of the asylum-seeker boat carrying 65 asylum-seekers from Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. The boat, which was en route from Indonesia to New Zealand, was found to be leaking too much to be repaired on the high seas and its engine was also malfunctioning.
The asylum-seekers were transferred to two smaller boats and directed back to Indonesia…
An Australian Secret Intelligence Service officer aboard the Wollongong, dressed in civilian clothes, is believed to have facilitated the payment… It is possible that payments were made to entice the crew to return the asylum-seekers to Indonesia, although this has not occurred in previous boat turn-backs…
It is also possible that money was paid to crew members in return for information about the person or syndicate that organised the people-smuggling venture

Good point. It's all interesting. I thought a referendum or plebiscite may have to take place. However I heard some differing opinion from some legal experts. Just maybe it could be dealt with by joint sitting. Sort of unethical the Senators voting on their own future. The voting public could prosecute allegations of conflicts of intersect or lack of probity. I don't know the answer but like the joint sitting idea.

I forgot and watched Ramsay help a kitchen out. Was it any good o r?

twright, Shotgun, flying and all others who have commented since my two bobs worth above, I agree the voting system needs to be changed even though they said it would be the first tings they would look in to, BUT as the outcome of the election did not give them control of the senate and therefore it would be impossible to have these changes we need passed by the present senate.

The article in The Australian today makes an interesting read. The boat at the centre of this Storm in an Espresso Cup, was damaged and going to sink. Of course, once again, the truth is lost to the ABC, Fairfax and other enemy media. Shoot the lot

I vote for getting rid of SHY! Not pleasantly either!

Looks like monopoly money to me.

I don't believe their will be a DD. Tony Abbott will serve out his full term.

Too neat and crisp and clean. If you were a people smuggler and was handed over $5000 or whatever, wouldn't you keep taking it out of your pocket and counting it over and over as you have never seen so much money and know the people around you can't be trusted?

Poor lad, Karma is a killer, Bye Bye.
