UNHAPPY CLAPS FOR A SHAMEFUL SCAM
Four-time Walkley Award winning political commentator and Churchill Fellow, has returned to the fray over concern that the integrity of news dissemination is continually being threatened by a partisan media.
I had visitors yesterday but still kept an eye on the ALP Conference and in particular Bill Shorten’s new “road to Damascus” boat policy... but there was something wrong! Something didn’t fit.
He almost choked up a tear as he explained the anguish he was suddenly suffering over the hundreds who drowned at sea and how his conscience had finally become his master.
My bullshit meter’s high tensile needle suddenly snapped.
Where were the hard Left of the Senate? Why were Wong and Plibersek arranging proxy votes to placate the rage of their Left electorates? It seemed only those delegates who were not apprised of the scam were demonstrating.
Why wasn’t the Left of Caucus tearing Shorten’s throat out? Why this warm glow of collegial compromise over such a long-standing, divisive issue as boat turn-arounds?
Something else was afoot and it was becoming clearer by the second. Richard Marles and Bill Shorten were in the middle of pulling off a political master-stroke only ALP insiders knew about.
The rank and file were kept ignorant to lend legitimacy to the tactic. Not even a nonplussed Coalition understood it.
Let’s unpick what just happened: The Coalition’s despised Sovereign Borders’ policy has been a raging success and Shorten could not afford to go to an election with that point of difference.
He needed to destroy what would have been Abbott’s primary weapon of attack otherwise he had no chance of election success.
Labor’s new boats policy includes, “an option to turn around boats where it’s safe to do so”... identical to Sovereign Borders except for that innocent little word “option”. Well, I could claim an option to turn gay tomorrow, but it’s not going to happen and if Shorten is claiming an option to turn around boats, that too is not going to happen because in Government it would rip the ALP apart.
This new policy “option” is so against everything Labor stands for that it could only be adopted in Opposition as a means to gain Government. A carbon copy of Gillard's carbon tax.
I mean seriously, did it really take eight years before 1200 drownings suddenly started to tug at Shorten’s conscience? Or was it that an election is due next year?
The wash-up of this master stroke is that Labor has no intention to turn around a single boat! And this pre-election bullshit is something the hard Left will wear only to gain Office and then it’s full steam ahead. Turn-backs cannot possibly happen under Labor without a terminal split in the Party.
The Greens will benefit electorally from the scam but their preferences can only go to Labor anyway. Clever!
