In all the hoo-haa of budget week Senator Cory Bernardi managed to put forward and win an inquiry into third party certification schemes in Australia. This is great news. It includes, but is not limited to, halal certification.

From the official Government website these are the terms of reference for the inquiry:

On 13 May 2015, the Senate referred the following matters to the Economics References Committee for inquiry and report by 30 November 2015:

a)  the extent of food certification schemes and certifiers in Australia including, but not limited to, schemes related to organic, kosher, halal and genetically-modified food and general food safety certification schemes;

 b)  current labelling requirements of food certification schemes;

c)   the need for labelling on products produced by companies that pay certification fees;

d)    whether current schemes provide enough information for Australian consumers to make informed purchasing decisions;

 e)   details regarding certification fees paid by food producers and/or manufacturers, and the potential for these to impact on prices for consumers;

 f)   the importance of food certification schemes in relation to export market access and returns to producers;

g)    the extent and adequacy of information available to the public about certifiers including, but not limited to, certification processes, fees and financial records; and any related matters.

The website to start making submissions is up and running!

If you have any concerns what-so-ever with halal certification now is your chance to be heard. The time for having a whinge on the Pickering Post, or commenting on social media, or grumbling to your spouse over brekky is past. Now you need to act and be heard. The government must read and act on the submissions. They will note/read social media comments to reach a decision. But they will take the submissions seriously.

PLEASE take your time to read through the terms of reference carefully. Your submission must directly relate to these. It may be all of the terms of reference, or just a few. But it is important to note it must directly relate.

Take your time to carefully word your submission. Be factual and courteous or you will not be taken seriously. Your opinions, experiences, beliefs and ideas are valid and important.

Whether your concerns are to do with where the money goes, or how you feel discriminated against because of your own religious beliefs, or the lack of choice because of labelling, or many other concerns, they are valid and worth communicating!

This is your time. This is the opportunity you have waited for. Write your own submission and spread the word. Ask others to also write theirs. Ask your butcher and local abattoir workers and retailers and more to write in. Don't waste this chance to have your say. You will be heard. It is so important this inquiry hears from a wide variety of people.

I also understand you can make a confidential submission but you must make this very clear at the beginning of your submission.

You have until 31st July so there is no rush. But please don't put it off. Start writing out your thoughts today. Add to them in the coming weeks and then form your submission according to the terms of reference.

Please act. The responsibility now lies with you. There is a real chance here to make a difference. Don't have any regrets. Don't let this opportunity pass. If you have ever complained about halal certification then this is your way to ensure that you will be heard.

Halal Senate Inquiry Submission: 'I Want Clear Labelling So I Can Choose Not To Support A Death Cult' Less than a week old, Bernardi’s halal inquiry is already getting to the bottom of food funding terrorism. And when we say bottom, we mean BOTTOM! Max Chalmers reports. If you’re going to accuse Muslims of an international conspiracy that uses food certification to impose a secret religious tax on literally everybody to help funnel money towards terrorism – without providing evidence to support the claims – you may as well do it with a smile. That’s the first big takeaway from Cory Bernardi and the Coalition’s anti-Muslim witch-hunt senate inquiry into food certification, established with the assistance of crossbenchers last week. It may be less than a week old, but with three submissions already so far, it’s easy to see why Bernardi and his party were so anxious to put the time and energy of the Australian senate towards this inquiry. The Australian Crime Commission has previously said it has no evidence halal certification in Australia funds terrorism, and Dr Jan Ali, a senior lecturer in Islam and modernity at the University of Western Sydney, told New Matilda last week it was a “wild allegation”. But in a submission to the inquiry, Australian citizen Florence Corneloup has hit back in the best way possible: with a sternly worded letter, in purple comic sans font. ……………….Dear Senator, First I would like to thank you for speaking up for the majority of Australians. I am mainly concerned about halal certification. I would like to know why this certification is in Australia for such a small minority of the population. I would like to see this particular certification abolished and reconised as a scam. I would like to know how much is passed onto the consumer and if we do buy halal certified because we have so little choice, will we be able to get a tax refund from the government as this tax does not apply to us. I would like very clear labeling so I can choose not to support a death cult. I would like to know exactly where the money for this certification goes. Regards, Florence Corneloup…………………What’s really interesting about this submission is that in lieu of banning Muslims from being able to have food certified as halal, Corneloup argues there should be a tax refund for people who end up buying certified products. It’s too late for Budget 2015, but Joe Hockey’s people should take note for next year. Channeling the language of the Prime Minister, Corneloup also writes: “I would like very clear labeling so I can choose not to support a death cult.” Not a bad idea. In the interests of clear labeling, New Matilda has developed a stamp which can be used to easily identify death cults, and products which support them. We’ll be rolling it out in the coming weeks and months, to help readers identify Death Cult products, which they may then choose to boycott (or support) there is, of course, another side to the story. When New Matilda spoke to an academic and a halal certifier last week - both said they thought the inquiry could have some positives, and might finally put to bed the myths around the process. Both would be happy to see a national standard in place, something that will help Muslim consumers feel confident in the process. In an encouraging sign the inquiry won’t be a total waste of time and money - the first submission actually flags issues around the labeling of low GI foods, arguing clearer standards would be useful for diabetics. But if the other early submissions are anything to go by, the inquiry will be dominated by conspiracy theories about Muslims and thinly veiled prejudice.

Great work Kirralie and Cory Bernadi.

Cory spoke well tonight. Didn't give Emma A. much of a chance.

The cost of anti-terrorism measures are high: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/opinion/abbott-government-happy-to-pay-billion-dollar-security-price-tag-to-keep-australia-safe/story-fni0cwl5-1227358195544

Bernardi will be on Lateline tonight at 9.30pm to talk about the Halal enquiry, but since when has that moron Tony Jones been presenter of this show??.. I'm not sure I will watch, as Jones will, as usual, talk over him & present the Leftie view: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/programs/lateline/

I would love to see the G20 nations withdraw from the UN & then see that useless organisation implode from lack of funding. It wont happen but I can dare to dream.

So we have someone in Dastyari who is either moslem or certainly pro moslem chairing the Senate halal enquiry. In the legal context that is a conflict of interest and a judge in similar curcumstances would disqualify himself. What a lot of bullshit.

If Muslim Dastyari is chairman of the senate committee (especially after he opposed it along with the other ALP senators) it will be a whitewash of a hearing & this wanker will collect another $30,000 fee (on top of his generous remuneration). It remains with us to keep the boycotts happening & continue to name/shame the weak business that bend over to this scam.

I just read the article and I cannot believe what is going on.
The Muslims will never give up Halal certification.
Their meeting on 13th June, 2015 will be held in Istanbul.
I am frighten what might be happening sooner than later.

Hey, Sparky, how's the identity upgrade going?

Indonesia has run out of money to feed THEIR refugees.This could get interesting

I just looked it's 4,052

Bruce I thought we were friends. I realise your passion but to repost my comments is unfair.

Coming last?

Senate Economics Reference Committee :

I note that :

*..3 of the 6 committee members are ALP and .. –

*..Sam Dastyari, ex union boss,..chief NSW Labor fund raiser and head kicker,…
of Iranian parents,.. will be Chairman of the investigation into the Halal Food Tax.

*..19 out of 20 electoral seats with large muslim voter population are Labor ( naturally ).

The outcome is a foregone conclusion in favor of the Halal Tax and no suggestion it is being used for illegal purposes……An official whitewash / sham.

Add a hostile pro muslim senate and no control or change to the halal extortion will ever occur.

little warning to other idiots who think it might be fun fighting alongside psychopaths:

A MELBOURNE teen who was close mates with terrorist Numan Haider has died fighting with jihadis in the Middle East.

Irfaan Hussein, 19, has been killed while fighting for Islamic State — with speculation either a bomb blast killed him or he was beheaded by extremists for attempting to return to Victoria.
