ABC PAY FOR VIEW?
... okay, but who's paying?
Don is no-nonsense bloke with a background in the arts and business. He pens unique Aussie banter and has an interest in all things controversial
I opened my copy of this morning’s Oz newspaper to be greeted with this headline: “Allow ABC to charge for content”. Well, my immediate reaction was, “Bloody Palmer, that moron! Just another of his hare-brained ideas”. But hey! I was completely off base, it was some committee’s recommendation. “Savings and revenue stream options.”
“Pay per view”, they say. An efficiency review initiated by Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull, conducted by former Seven West Media’s Chief Financial Officer, Peter Lewis.
Hmmm, didn’t Seven West Media nearly go bust? Pay per view... the ABC? If they think it would be a suitable initiative to get people to watch the ABC, well yes, I would go along with that, though it depends on how much they were going to pay me to actually return to our public broadcaster.
Would that be payment for every show I watched or a blanket weekly payment provided I watched so many shows per week? Seems like a funny way to fix the ABC actually, because I thought they were not going to spend any more money at the ABC.
No. Not on your life Malcolm, no matter how much you pay me I could not watch that horrible drivel called Media Watch... no, no! Never!
Seriously though, once upon a time, ten years or so ago, the ABC was a great place to be. Then, through the unions and the usual subterfuge, the socialist Left got hold of it and stuffed it.
Just like they got hold of the hospitals through Whitlam and stuffed a world-class system supported by huge amounts of money from the private health funds... pretty much rooted it and it costs a bomb to run, employing more pen pushers than doctors and nurses.
Then there was the education system which began with universities through Whitlam and started churning out socialist rat-bags instead of well-balanced educated people. Those socialist rat-bags filtered through to the teaching profession... and now look at the state of things! Who runs the education system now? Damned unions in every State and our international standing just keeps falling each year right across the board.
But the great social agenda did not stop there. Our highly honest, forthright unions have also taken to our manufacturing industries as well. “Manufacturing industries”, you say? What bloody manufacturing industries?
Yep! Unionised and bastardised into oblivion, the once efficient producers of high quality, innovative, Australian-made product... gone to Gowings! Priced out of the market by continuous wage demands, EBAs, demarcation disputes and antiquated, non-productive work-to-rule restrictions.
Everything the great social experiment has touched has turned to shit... and the ABC is no exception. Remember those great days when it was actually “our ABC” and did not belong to the ALP?
I recall a balanced and highly-informative 7pm news bulletin, followed by a never-miss 7:30 Report with Kerry O’Brien. An absolute must was 4 Corners, along with Foreign Correspondent, and you actually had balanced reporting on Late Line.
What about the great Aussie shows like ‘McGooley’, ‘Mother & Son’ and ‘Brides of Christ’, just to name a couple, but there were many more. Terrific television, and the ABC would consume at least 35 per cent of your weekly TV time.
What do you get now? Re-runs of ‘Midsummer Murders’ and ‘Agatha Christie’! Just how many bloody times can you watch re-runs of Hercule Poirot?
“These days you would be lucky if the ABC was 10% of your TV viewing time and that’s on a good week.” Hmmm... pay per view? Dunno if they could pay me enough to watch the crap being churned out by that ALP propaganda machine anyway. Well, come on Malcolm, put a figure on it... how bloody much are you willing to offer me?
Just remember this though, Malcolm. Tony Jones ain’t no George Negus... Uh! What do you mean, I got it wrong? “They want me to pay to watch the bloody ABC?” Ha ha ha ha ha!
“You’re pullin’ my leg?”
This idiot called Malcolm thinks people would actually pay money to watch the ABC! What a fuckwit! We already pay a bloody motza and what are we getting for our outlay now?
An electronic version of Pravda!
