Wine is halal? Making up rules as they go along….I am sure you have heard by now that a Sydney Sheik by the name of Mostafa Rashed decided to glean a little attention and stir up some controversy on Egyptian television by proclaiming that wine is halal.

“Mostafa Rashed, Imam of Sydney mosque in Australia, made a religious edict saying wine is not banned in Islam.

Rashed considers Quranic verses merely ban drunkenness, not the wine itself.

In a talk show aired on the privately-owned Al-Tahrir TV channel on Friday, Rashed said that the Prophet's instruction banning wine is weak, thus it’s not mandatory to follow it. Apparently a Dubai company that has recently launched a premium halal wine list also thinks it's a load of bunkum.

“This is an edict that I am responsible for”, he said, adding that a small amount of wine does not lead to drunkenness and that heaven includes rivers of wine.”

This has sparked a serious backlash from other Islamic scholars who claim this edict is in fact contrary to Sharia Law. What needs to be highlighted here is that there is actually very little consensus among Muslims as to what is halal, haram or otherwise. They just can’t seem to agree whether it is food, wine or a political regime.

One Imam proclaims something, another denounces it. Who can be trusted?

More concerning though is the fact that Islamic halal certification agents could now waltz into a winery here and try to convince the winemaker to pay a certification fee. He will say, “Oh, but think of the millions of Muslims you can now market your wine to.” He could try to smooth talk the small business owner into handing over some hard earned dollars on the promise of new and illustrious markets in the Middle East.

Will he suggest that the winemaker is perhaps a bigot or racist if he refuses to pay the certification fee? Will he produce the edict written by Imam Mostafa Rashed to try to convince him?

So, while this might help some Muslims justify raising the odd glass, it is concerning for the rest of us that another one of our products could be threatened with certification. It would be as ludicrous as certifying plastic knives and forks, packaging and transport.

Oh, I forgot, they already are halal certified... looks like wine is also about to bite the dust.

I’M OFFENDED JULIA, WHY DIDN’T YOU ASK ME? I do really good portraits

Sydney's sister city of San Fran... or is it brother city?

The stupid goat rooter paedos have got hostages at Martin Place in Sydney.. fuck off out of Australia all Muslims, we don't want your primitive hatred in our beautiful country!!

Stupid. Oh! Its 'silver' ...says it all.

Tech - You're about as capable of educating anyone as your 'gollywog'. Thanks for the laughs mate. I like you - hang around!

Fix your potty mouth technologyeditor. You used my saviour's name, Jesus, for blasphemy reasons.!

Matthew 15:18-19 says:

"But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.…”

The issue is clearly not the alcohol. The label shows that has been removed. The big issue here is the infiltration and tainting of a wine industry product by the halal certification racket. The fact is that halal racket operators are prepared to bend the rules on food and food processing associations with alcohol whether as part of the process or part of sanitation techniques. This latest infestation of halal certification into the wine industry points squarely at

Dont tell Golden Circle this as they use alcohol in their flavouring they might want to go Halal

cmac1939 - yes, sorry I think I pounced on you unfairly. No, I cant decipher your acronym IQ test either...but I'll try - how about "Black English Evangelist"?

techno go suck an egg.

the Prophet's instruction banning wine is weak........ I'm offended at that, behead the blasphemous bastard.

What a load of unmitigated bullshit

TE, your comments only insult yourself - certainly not the profit that muslims are making on their scam. Its the high-brow twerps like yourself who think they have 'it all worked out' - only to find out later - what the rest of us already understand. There is a scam going on - not by Kirralee or Halal Choices - but by muslims.

Yes, definitely the latter. Count yourself lucky that you can make the distinction - now go the next step and get all erudite about I S L A M.

TE, there is no argument that non muslims have to be compelled to pay islam religious tax cert fees. Zero. It just cannot be justified that non muslims pay for anything islam. Nothing more to said, it's just extortion, that's it.

Jack, too funny A :)

Well TEC - as usual you have completely missed the point (on purpose I think) and you revert to typical left potty mouth name calling. Its a normal response from lefties that can't form a sensible comment . Its an old ruse.

Really TE? You are pathetic. I'm going to guess you're a mooseskum who is a typical scam artist. We do not want to even finance a mosque with halal cert fees, let alone fund terrorism. You're a f$cking moron.

you keep coming back to abuse a woman
you fucking idiot piss off over to drum

Independent Grocer magazines labels us misinformed and prejudiced : my reply to them : I have read your article in the December issue of 'Buy Australian' regarding Halal certification and would like to proffer the following comments:

It seems that just any group can call themselves a Halal Certification Board and thereafter 'persuade', maybe by rather dubious means, Australian manufacturers to, basically, donate to their coffers.
Much of this money undoubtedly does get channelled to the Middle East where it may be utilized by terrorist groups. If you suppose that any local Moslem group would ever confirm this, then you are somewhat naive.

This certification fee, a not insubstantial amount in dollar terms, is naturally passed on to the consumer in the purchase price. The Moslem community represents approx. 2% of the Australian population, yet the 98% non-Moslem section is now being forced to pay this Halal fee via the purchase price. Please, explain to me, why the religious based dietary habits of a minority group should be fiscally inflicted on the majority non-religious group? Especially when that non-religious group has concerns about where this money is being rerouted to, and exactly what it is being used for?

There is no issue 'per se' with products being marked Halal, but if the Moslem community wishes this, that surely it should be the one that is paying for it?
I realize that Halal identified product is of benefit when trading with Moslem countries, and that it benefits the Australian producer to so identify their product. But why must they have to pay any fee, other than perhaps a modest one, to do so? This does seem to be, in the main, simply a money-extorting exercise by all these registration boards.

The fact that you, as a group, seem to find it acceptable for the majority of Australian consumers to have to contribute to this 'enterprise', in this way, is disappointing, unacceptable, indeed somewhat insulting to these consumers..
It should be our choice whether we financially support any minority group, which we should be able to choose to do directly, not in this underhand manner.
This is why I do not buy products that are Halal certified.

Being an equal opportunity purchaser, complainer, I also am against the fees being levied to register the Heart Tick of Approval, and Kosher logo. Once again, believing that these organizations should fund their own campaigns.

You are real wrong. All of us object to the religious tax that supports islam. islam should not be getting a free ride from us non muslims. islam is the scam, it's an organized crime unit. Halal certification must be stopped and your pityful attempts at obfuscation will not stop this campaign. It will continue until halal cert is banned in Oz.

Enrique, some money movers in lakemba have just recently been shutdown. They were moving millions out of Australia to the ME. So yes, halal certification money is not all accounted for and a large part is going to the organized crime called islam. I don't want to give money to any religion to further their cause. F!ck that. Religionists are deluded and dangerous. All religion needs to be purged from society. Start with islam, the worst of the worst. Certainly don't give them any money.
